NPC stands for “non-player character,” a character in a video game that the computer controls instead of a person. As slang, calling someone an NPC means they seem to act on autopilot: repeating the same lines, following the crowd or showing no thought of their own. It is usually an insult, though people also use it as a joke about themselves.
What does NPC mean in a text?
In games, NPCs are the shopkeepers, guards and townspeople who repeat a few lines and walk the same path over and over. Merriam-Webster’s dictionary dates the gaming term to 1991. The slang borrows that picture of someone with no inner life. Merriam-Webster’s slang entry says NPC may be used dismissively of anyone who shows sheeplike behavior. In everyday chat it covers several situations.
| How NPC is used | Example | What the sender means |
|---|---|---|
| An insult for a follower | “he’s such an NPC, he copies whatever’s trending” | He has no ideas of his own |
| Mocking a scripted answer | “customer service gave me NPC answers” | They repeated a script and did not listen |
| Joking about routine | “wake up, school, sleep, NPC life” | My days feel repetitive and dull |
| Feeling unimportant | “I’m just an NPC in their drama” | I am a background character in someone else’s story |
| A TikTok Live format | “she’s doing an NPC stream” | A creator is acting like a game character for gifts |
The first two rows are the sharpest. The middle two are often self-mockery and do not hurt anyone. The last row is not about personality at all. It names a kind of livestream, covered below.
Where does NPC slang come from?
The gaming term came first, and gamers used it for computer-controlled characters for decades before it became an insult. The insult took shape on internet forums. Wikipedia’s article on the meme says a grey, expressionless cartoon face known as the NPC Wojak first appeared on 4chan in July 2016.
It reached the mainstream in October 2018. On 16 October that year The New York Times ran Kevin Roose’s article “What Is NPC, the Pro-Trump Internet’s New Favorite Insult?” Around the same time, The Week reported that Twitter had banned more than 1,500 accounts that posed as NPCs. Merriam-Webster’s slang entry notes that in recent years the term has often been used by conservatives about liberals.
Since then much of the political edge has worn off. Among teenagers today, NPC is mostly a general put-down for someone boring, predictable or easily led, and just as often a joke about their own routine.
What is an NPC stream on TikTok?
A separate trend borrowed the name. On TikTok Live, some creators act like game characters, repeating a short catchphrase and gesture each time a viewer sends a virtual gift. Wikipedia’s article says NPC streaming began on TikTok in 2022 and became widespread in 2023. The best-known example is Montreal creator Pinkydoll, whose catchphrase “ice cream so good” went viral in 2023.
For parents, this is the part worth a conversation. TikTok gifts are bought with coins that cost real money, and the streams are built to keep viewers tapping. A child who enjoys watching NPC streams may not connect that tap with spending. Checking purchase settings on the account is a simple step.
Is calling someone an NPC rude?
Usually, yes. It says the person has no thoughts of their own, which is a cutting thing to say about anyone. Between close friends it can be playful, especially when someone does something on autopilot, like walking into a glass door. Aimed at a stranger in a comment section, it is meant to dismiss them without engaging with what they said.
It is also lazy as an argument. Calling someone an NPC because they disagree with you does not show they are wrong. If you hear a teen using it a lot about classmates, it is worth asking what they mean, since it can slide into treating people as less than real.
How is NPC different from main character, side character and bot?
NPC belongs to a small family of words that borrow from games and films to describe people. The table shows how they compare.
| Term | What it means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| NPC | Acts on autopilot, no original thought | “that’s such an NPC take” |
| main character | Acts like the star of the story | “main character energy today” |
| side character | A supporting role in someone else’s life | “I’m a side character in this breakup” |
| bot | Replies mechanically, or is a fake account | “that reply sounds like a bot wrote it” |
| sheep | Follows the crowd without thinking | “they’re all sheep” |
NPC and sheep are close in meaning, but NPC adds the picture of a character stuck repeating the same lines. Main character is the opposite end of the scale. Someone with main character energy acts as if the story is about them, while an NPC is part of the scenery.
How to reply to NPC
How you answer depends on whether it was a joke, a jab or a question. These replies cover the usual cases.
- A friend teasing you: “you’re such an NPC lol” gets “I’ll have you know I have at least three lines of dialogue”
- Self-mockery: “NPC day, just work and sleep” gets “same, let’s do something fun this weekend”
- An insult in an argument: “ok NPC” gets “you can disagree, but tell me why”
- About a stream: “have you seen the NPC streams?” gets “yes, the ice cream so good one?”
- Not sure what they mean: “wait, NPC as in the game thing?”
