How does the emoji decoder work?
Type or paste any message, then press Decode. The tool finds each emoji it knows and shows a card with its name, its usual meaning in texts and its tone. It also writes a rough plain-English version of your message, with each emoji swapped for a few words. Skin tones and the small style marks phones add are ignored, so ππ½ reads the same as π.
Some emojis get a warning instead of a meaning. A few have adult meanings, and the decoder says so without explaining them. Any emoji that is not on our list is shown as βnot in our list yet,β so you know what was skipped. For short forms like wyd or ngl, use our text slang decoder instead.
What does each emoji mean in a text?
The tables below hold all 74 emojis, sorted into seven groups. Each row gives the emojiβs name, what it usually means in a text and how it tends to land. Type in the search box to find one fast, or pick a tone to see only those emojis. The decoder above reads its answers from these same tables.

Which emojis have two meanings?
Many emojis mean one thing on paper and another in a group chat. The skull is the best-known case, since it usually means someone is laughing, not that something died. The table shows both meanings, a clue for telling them apart and a simple way to reply. When the clue does not settle it, a short question is always safe.
| Emoji | Meaning one | Meaning two | Clue | How to reply |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| π | Laughing hard | Real death, Halloween or something scary | After a joke, meme or photo, it means laughing. | Laugh along or add to the joke. |
| π | Laughing, joy or βso cuteβ | Real sadness | Read the words next to it. βI canβt πβ after a meme is laughter. | If the news sounds bad, ask βare you okay?β |
| π | Calm and friendly | Passive-aggressive, βthis is fineβ when it is not | A short βfine πβ after a disagreement leans cold. | Ask a plain question, such as βare we good?β |
| π | Approval or βOKβ | A short, cold brush-off | One π in reply to a long message can feel curt. | If it matters, check in with words. |
| π | Please or thank you | Prayer or a respectful greeting | After a favor it means thanks. Before a request it means please. | Reply βyouβre welcomeβ or βof course.β It is rarely a high five. |
| π₯ | Great, exciting, popular | Real fire, heat or spicy food | Under a photo, song or outfit, it is praise. | Say thanks, or ask what they liked. |
| β | Coffee or tea | Gossip, as in βspill the teaβ | βSpill the ββ or ββ?β after news means they want the gossip. | Share only what is yours to share. |
| β¨ | Joy, love, something new | Mocking emphasis | Wrapped around a complaint, like ββ¨greatβ¨,β it is sarcasm. | Match the joke, or ask what went wrong. |
| π€ | Fuming or irritated | Proud and fired up | After a win or a hard workout, it means proud. | Cheer them on, or ask what happened. |
| π€ | Love and affection | Remembering someone who died | In a post about a loss, it is a sign of respect. | Keep the reply kind and simple. |
| π€ | I will keep the secret | Telling someone to zip it | After you share a secret, it means βmy lips are sealed.β | If it feels like βzip it,β ask what you said. |
What do the heart colors mean?
A red heart means love, but it is also the default reaction on many apps, so it often just means βI like this.β The white heart and the blue heart can mark someoneβs death, so they are common in posts about a loss. A black heart still mostly means love, even though it can also show sorrow or dark humor. Fans also claim colors, such as purple for BTS and green for NCT on X.
How should you reply to an emoji?
Most emojis need no special reply. A laugh, a heart or a thumbs up back is usually enough. Trouble starts when one emoji arrives alone, because there are no words to show the tone. A lone π or π after a long message can feel cold, even if the sender did not mean it that way.
When you are not sure, answer the words, not the emoji. If there are no words, a short question like βall good?β clears things up. Try not to answer a cold-looking emoji with a cold one of your own. People use emojis in different ways, and asking is kinder than guessing.
What should parents and teachers know about emojis?
Most emojis in a childβs or studentβs texts are jokes, praise and feelings. A row of π or π usually means something was funny, not that something is wrong. Emojipedia notes that some emojis have adult meanings, among them π, π, π¦, π and π₯΅. We do not explain those here, and the decoder flags them when they appear.
| Emoji | Name | Why the decoder flags it |
|---|---|---|
| π | Eggplant | Often has an adult meaning. Not explained here. |
| π | Peach | Often has an adult meaning. Not explained here. |
| π¦ | Sweat droplets | Often has an adult meaning. Not explained here. |
| π | Smirking face | Often has an adult meaning. Not explained here. |
| π₯΅ | Hot face | Often has an adult meaning. Not explained here. |
| π€ | Nerd face | Its buck-tooth design can call up an anti-Asian stereotype. |
| π | OK hand | The same hand sign is rude in parts of Europe, the Middle East and South America. |
Two other emojis can offend without the sender knowing it. Emojipedia says the buck-tooth design of π€ can call up an anti-Asian stereotype. It also notes that the π hand sign is rude in parts of Europe, the Middle East and South America. If an emoji worries you, ask your child what they meant before you decide anything.
What can this decoder not do?
This decoder covers 74 common emojis, while emoji reference sites list many more. Meanings also shift between friend groups and apps, so the tool shows the usual meaning, not the only one. Some emojis look very different on Apple, Google and Samsung phones, which can change how they read. Use the tone label as a hint, and trust what you know about the person who sent it.
