What Does IMO Mean? “In My Opinion,” Plus IMHO and IMNSHO

Last updated: October 19, 2026

IMO means “in my opinion.” People type it, often in lowercase as imo, to mark what they say as their own view and not a fact. A text like “imo the first movie was better” shares a take while leaving room for others to disagree. You will see it in texts, group chats, comment sections, Reddit threads and work chat apps.

IMO is an old internet abbreviation, yet it still sits in our list of Gen Z slang words because people use it every day. The letters stay the same everywhere, but the feeling behind them can shift. Sometimes imo makes a strong claim sound softer, and sometimes it does almost the opposite. Where it sits in the sentence is the first clue, so the next section starts there.

Where does imo go in a sentence?

Where it goesExampleWhat it usually signals
At the start“imo the first movie was better”A heads-up that a personal take is coming
At the end“the first movie was better imo”A softener added after a strong line
In the middle“the ending was, imo, way too long”A small aside, often in longer messages
Alone, as the whole reply“Should I text him?” “imo yes”A quick verdict when someone asked for advice

Putting imo at the start tells the reader up front that an opinion is on the way. At the end, it often works like a quick step back, as if the writer noticed the line sounded too sure. In the middle, it tends to show up in longer messages where someone is weighing both sides. None of these spots is wrong, so pick the one that matches how sure you feel.

Example group chat about a movie night where friends use imo at the start of a message, at the end of a message, and as a one-word answer to a question.
Example chat, not a real conversation: the same three letters in three different spots.

Is imo polite, or can it sound rude?

Most of the time imo is polite. It tells the other person you know they might see things differently, which keeps a chat from turning into a fight. Advice also lands better with it, since “imo you should apologize” sounds kinder than a flat order. It does the opposite job of fr, which stresses that you really mean something.

Imo can still come across as cold in an argument. A reply like “that’s a bad idea imo” after a long, heartfelt message may feel like a brush-off, since the writer gives no reason. Typing it in capitals, as in “IMO this is a mistake,” can also read as louder and more firm. If the topic is touchy, a full sentence such as “I see it differently, and here’s why” works better.

People who want to sound extra careful, or extra cheeky, reach for longer versions. One is IMHO, and it has a cousin called IMNSHO. They look almost the same, but they do not carry the same tone.

IMO vs IMHO vs IMNSHO: what is the difference?

LettersStands forToneExample
IMOIn my opinionPlain and neutral“imo pineapple belongs on pizza”
IMHOIn my humble opinion, or in my honest opinionModest, or playfully fake-modest“imho the sequel is better”
IMNSHOIn my not-so-humble opinionBold on purpose, as a joke“imnsho I make the best tacos in town”
NGLNot gonna lieHonest, a little like a confession“ngl I liked the sequel more”
FRFor realAdds weight instead of softening“that test was hard fr”

Wiktionary lists two readings for the H in IMHO: humble and honest. It says the humble version shows up in sources going back to 1986, while the honest version appears by 1994. Some people mean the humble part sincerely, but many use it with a wink, since the opinion that follows is rarely humble. IMNSHO, which Wiktionary marks as humorous, drops the act and admits the speaker feels very sure.

IMO is not the same as ngl, even though both come right before a personal take. Ngl suggests you are admitting something a little awkward or surprising, while imo simply labels a view as yours. Our guide to what ngl means covers that confession tone in more detail. All of these are casual, so they suit friends more than formal writing.

Where did IMO come from?

No dictionary we checked gives a first date for IMO itself. Merriam-Webster lists it as an abbreviation for “in my opinion” with a few example quotes, but no start date. Wiktionary’s note on IMHO points to sources from 1986, so the longer form was in use by then, and IMO may well be as old. Treat that last part as a likely guess, not a proven fact.

The oldest Urban Dictionary entry we found for IMO is dated January 31, 2003, and it simply spells out “in my opinion.” Entries from 2004 and 2005 describe it as a forum and message-board habit, and one jokes that it weakens your argument. Entries from 2018 call it a common texting abbreviation. The term moved from forums to phones without changing its meaning, but not every IMO you see is about opinions.

What else can IMO mean?

IMOWhat it isClue that this is the one
In my opinionTexting and internet slangLowercase, next to a personal view
International Maritime OrganizationA United Nations agency that deals with shippingNews about ships, ports or the sea
International Mathematical OlympiadAn international math competitionTalk of medals, teams or math problems
imo, the appA messaging and video-call app, released in April 2007Words like call, download or update
Imo StateA state in southeast Nigeria, formed in 1976Place names such as Owerri, its capital

Context almost always settles it. A lowercase imo in a chat is the opinion meaning, while a capital IMO in a news story about ships points to the maritime group. The app is usually written in lowercase too, so look for words like “call” or “download” nearby. Imo State takes its name from the Imo River, which runs along its eastern border.

How should you reply when someone says imo?

The right reply depends on what the other person wants from you. Sometimes they are giving advice, sometimes they want you to agree, and sometimes they are opening a friendly debate. Pick the case below that sounds like your chat to see replies that fit. Each one keeps things kind without pretending you agree when you do not.

They gave you advice: “imo you should take the job”

They are trying to help, and imo shows they know it is your call. Thank them, then agree or ask what made them lean that way.

Try: “yeah that’s what I was thinking, thank you” or “what makes you say that?”

They want you to agree: “the new album is fire imo”

A quick yes is fine if you agree. If you do not, light pushback is welcome, because imo already left room for it.

Try: “same, track 3 especially” or “I like the old one more, but I get it.”

They started a fun debate: “imo cereal is a soup”

This is an open door to play along. Push back with a reason, or add your own hot take.

Try: “no way, soup has to be hot” or “ok but then is a hot dog a sandwich?”

They used it to shut down an argument: “that’s just wrong imo”

Here imo can feel like a wall. Ask for the reason instead of trading short replies, and move to a call if things are heating up.

Try: “which part seems wrong to you?” or “can we talk about this on the phone?”

Can you use IMO at work or in school?

In casual work chat, such as Slack or Teams, imo usually fits fine. It has no rude or adult meaning, so it will not get anyone in trouble. In formal emails, reports and school essays, though, write the words out or choose “I think” or “in my view.” In an essay, a clear argument backed by evidence does the same job without the label.

For parents, imo is one of the easiest abbreviations to read in a teen’s messages. It simply means the writer is sharing a view, and it has no hidden or risky second meaning in texting. If other words in the same thread are less clear, the text slang translator on our home page can decode a whole message at once.
