What Does HBU Mean in a Text? The Question Sent Back to You

Last updated: October 14, 2026

HBU means “how about you,” a short way to hand a question back to the person you are texting. Someone answers what you asked, then adds hbu so you get a turn to answer too. Wiktionary lists it as internet slang for “how ’bout you,” with an example of a friend who says they are about to go to bed and then asks hbu. The letters stay the same in every chat, but what they ask depends on the line that came right before them.

What does HBU mean in a text?

In a text, hbu points back at the question that came just before it. Read that question and you know what they are asking you. If you asked how their day went and they say “good, hbu,” they want to hear about your day. The table below shows some common pairs.

Their messageWhat hbu is asking youA reply that fits
“good, hbu?”How are you doing?“Pretty good, just tired”
“nothing much, hbu”What are you up to?“Same, watching a show”
“i’m free saturday, hbu”Are you free then too?“Saturday works for me”
“i loved the ending, hbu”What did you think of it?“It lost me at the end”
“getting pizza, hbu”What do you want to eat?“Pepperoni for me”

Notice that each reply answers the same question the other person just answered. That is the whole deal behind hbu: you share, then I share. Answering something else, or sending only “good,” can make the chat stall. So why do people bother to add it at all?

Why do people add HBU after their own answer?

Texting has no faces or tone of voice, so a chat dies fast when one person only answers. Adding hbu shows you want to hear from them and keeps the turns moving. One Urban Dictionary entry from March 2022 puts it simply: people send hbu so they do not come off as a dry texter. In other words, it is a small sign of interest.

Not everyone sees it that way, though. A 2020 Urban Dictionary entry for “nothing much hbu” calls that line dry and says it makes people want to leave the conversation. Both views are fair, because the same three letters can carry real interest or none at all. What decides it is what comes with them.

Example text chat in which one friend says their day was long and asks hbu, and the other answers with what they did and asks a follow-up question
An example chat (made for this guide, not a real screenshot): hbu hands the question back, and a real answer keeps the chat going.

Is HBU rude, dry or friendly?

On its own, hbu is polite, since it asks about the other person. It turns dry when it is all you send, over and over, with no detail of your own. Compare “good hbu” with “good, I finally finished my essay, hbu?” and you will see that the second one gives the other person something to reply to. A few signals help you read the mood.

How it arrivesHow it usually reads
“hbu?” after a real answerInterested and happy to keep talking
“good hbu” every single timeLow effort, or busy, or bored
“hbu!!” or “hbu 😊”Warm and glad you are talking
“hbu” with no answer of their ownPassing the question back without sharing
“anyway, hbu?” after a long storyMaking room for you after talking a lot

These are tendencies, not rules. Some people text short because they are at work or on the go, not because they are bored. If the short replies keep coming for days, that tells you more than any one message. Next, it helps to know the short forms that hbu gets mixed up with.

HBU vs WBU, WYD and HYD: what is the difference?

HBU has a few close cousins, and they are easy to mix up. WBU means “what about you,” which Wiktionary lists as the initialism of those words, and it does the same job as hbu. WYD and HYD are not hand-back questions at all, because they open a new topic. If you get WYD, the sender wants to know what you are doing right now.

Short formFull wordsWhat it doesExample
HBUhow about you (how ’bout you)Hands a question back to you“tired, hbu?”
WBUwhat about youSame job as hbu“I’m in, wbu?”
WYDwhat (are) you doingAsks what you are up to now“wyd rn”
HYDhow (are) you doingAsks how you are“hey, hyd”

Hbu and wbu are swapped freely, and neither one is more polite. Pick whichever you type faster. WYD and HYD start something new, so answer them in full before you send a question back. Here is how to answer hbu itself.

How should you reply to HBU?

The best reply answers the same question they just answered, then adds one detail. That detail gives them something to react to, and a question of your own keeps the chat going. Pick the case that matches your chat to see a reply that fits. Each one opens with a tap.

They told you how they are

Answer how you are, then add why. “Doing okay, my shift ran late” beats a bare “good.” If you want to keep talking, end with a small question about their day.

They told you what they are doing

Say what you are doing, even if it sounds boring. “Just eating cereal and watching TikTok” is a perfectly good answer. Then ask about their thing, such as how the game or show is going.

They gave you their opinion

Give your own take, even if it is different from theirs. “I liked it, but the ending felt rushed” shows you thought about it. A different view often makes a better chat than plain agreement.

They are making a plan

Give a clear yes, no or maybe, with a time if you can. “Saturday works, after 2” lets them lock it in. If you cannot make it, offer another day so it does not sound like a brush-off.

Where did HBU come from?

Nobody has shown who first typed hbu, so its origin is unclear. The oldest Urban Dictionary entry for it that we found is dated December 9, 2004, and it already defines hbu as “how bout u.” Entries from January and February 2009 give the same meaning in full words. A 2016 entry claims it began in an AOL Instant Messenger chat in early 2004, but it offers no proof, so treat that as a story rather than a fact.

The spelling tells a small story of its own. “How ’bout you” is how the phrase sounds when people say it fast, and the letters H, B and U follow that spoken version. That fits the 2004 entry, which spells it “how bout u.” If a whole message full of short forms leaves you guessing, paste it into our text slang translator for a plain English version.

Can HBU mean something else?

Outside texting, HBU is also the old short name of Houston Baptist University in Texas. The school changed its name to Houston Christian University in September 2022, so newer news uses the new name. You can still meet HBU in older articles and on fan pages. Context makes it clear, because nobody asks about a university right after telling you about their day.

Urban Dictionary also holds a few joke and adult readings of hbu, but you will rarely meet them in everyday chats. When a message ends with hbu and a question mark, it means how about you. If you are unsure, the safe move is to answer the plain question and see how they respond. For more short forms that work the same way, browse our Gen Z slang list.
