OFC means “of course.” It is a quick yes in a text, a DM or a game chat. People type it when the answer is easy and they do not want to spell it out. Most of the time it is friendly, but where it sits in the message can change how it lands.
What does ofc stand for?
The three letters come from two words. O and F stand for “of,” and C stands for “course.” Most people type it in lowercase, and “Ofc” and “OFC” mean the same thing. You will see it most as a reply to a question or a thank-you.
Some people read the F as a swear word, which turns it into “of f***ing course.” Wiktionary lists that reading too, but marks it as uncommon. Its usage note points to a 2023 Tumblr poll with 2,909 votes, where 64.8% picked plain “of course.” So the safe guess is always the clean one.
The two readings do the same job in a chat. Both are a strong yes. The only real gap is how much heat the sender meant to put in it. That heat comes less from the letters and more from where they sit, so that is the next thing to check.
How does the tone of ofc change inside a message?
Placement does most of the work. At the front of a line, ofc sounds like a warm yes. At the back, it leans toward “obviously,” and that can sting. All capitals add energy, and a period after it can make it feel cold.
| Where it sits | How it reads | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Start of the message | Warm, happy to help | “ofc, I’ll save you a seat” |
| On its own | A fast yes, a little flat | “ofc” |
| End of the message | Close to “obviously,” can sound snippy | “I locked the door ofc” |
| All capitals | Excited or very sure | “OFC I’m coming!!” |
| With a period | Cool, maybe annoyed | “Ofc.” |
These are reading tips, not fixed rules. A close friend can send a bare “ofc” and mean nothing cold by it. The same reply from someone you just met may feel short. Tiny replies like yh have the same problem, since two or three letters carry very little feeling.

Look at what changed between the two replies in the picture. The words around ofc did the work, not ofc itself. One reply offers help, and the other answers a question the sender did not like. That second kind is why people ask if the term is rude.
Is ofc rude or sarcastic?
On its own, no. It is one of the more polite short replies, because the full phrase is a kind way to say yes. It turns sharp when it answers something the other person feels they should not have been asked. “Did you feed the dog?” followed by “ofc” can sound like “why would you even ask?”
Sarcasm shows up when the yes is clearly not a happy one. “Ofc it rained on the one day I washed my car” is a groan, not an answer. Nobody is being rude to you there. The sender is just annoyed at their luck.
If a reply felt cold and you are not sure, look at their usual style. Someone who always types in short bursts, like a lone mk, is not upset with you. Someone who sends full lines and then drops to a bare “ofc.” may be. A quick “you good?” clears it up faster than guessing.
How do you reply to ofc?
Most of the time you do not need to answer the ofc itself. It closed the question, so you can move the chat on. A short thanks or the next detail of the plan is enough. Match the energy they gave you.
- After a favor: “thank you, you’re the best”
- After a plan is confirmed: “perfect, see you at 7”
- After a warm ofc from a crush: “good, I was hoping you’d say that”
- After a snippy one: “just checking, no stress”
Should you send ofc, or type “of course”?
The short form belongs in casual chat. Friends, family, group chats and game lobbies are all fine. Anything formal needs the full words, because the short form can look lazy to someone who does not text that way. Tap a case below to check.
A friend asks if you can pick them up
Send ofc. This is the exact job the short form was made for. Put it at the start, like “ofc, what time?”, so it reads warm.
Your manager asks if the report will be ready
Type it out. “Of course, it will be ready by noon” sounds sure and polite. A bare “ofc” to a boss can read as careless, even on a work chat app.
A teacher or a client emails a question
Type it out, and write a full sentence. Email is slower and more formal than chat. Short forms that work with friends look out of place there.
Someone thanks you for a big favor
Either works, but the full words feel warmer here. “Of course, any time” shows you meant it. Save the short form for small things.
One spelling point trips people up. “Of course” is always two words. “Ofcourse” written as one word is a mistake. If you want it short, use ofc, and if you want it long, keep the space.
How is ofc different from obv, def, np and yw?
These short replies overlap, but each has its own job. Ofc and def both say yes, while obv says the answer should have been clear already. Np and yw are answers to thanks, and that is a place where ofc fits too. You can find more of them in our list of Gen Z slang words.
| Short form | Stands for | Best used when |
|---|---|---|
| ofc | of course | You are giving a glad yes, or answering thanks |
| obv | obviously | The answer is plain to see; it can sound sharp |
| def | definitely | You are sure and want to sound keen |
| np | no problem | Someone thanked you for a small favor |
| yw | you’re welcome | Someone thanked you and you want to be polite |
If you worry about sounding sharp, pick def over ofc at the end of a line. “I’ll be there def” is hard to read as rude. A bare ofc is easier to take the wrong way. When in doubt, add a word or two after it.
How old is ofc?
Nobody has pinned down who typed it first. The oldest dated record we could find is an Urban Dictionary entry from June 16, 2004. It says the term is “used in instant messaging,” so it was already known in chat programs by then. No dictionary we checked gives an earlier date.
The ruder reading shows up later in the same place. An Urban Dictionary entry dated October 9, 2009 says the all-caps form stands for the swear version. Big dictionaries have not caught up with either one. Merriam-Webster lists “ofc” only as a short form of “office.”
What else can OFC mean?
In capitals, and outside of chat, the letters point to other things. The topic around them makes the meaning clear. A sports page and a fan fiction site will not mean the same OFC. These are the ones you are most likely to meet.
| Meaning | Where you see it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Oceania Football Confederation | Soccer news. It is one of FIFA’s six regional bodies and was founded in 1966. | “an OFC qualifying match” |
| Original female character | Fan fiction tags. Dictionary.com has an entry for this sense. | “a story tagged OFC” |
| Office | Forms and address lines. This is the Merriam-Webster sense. | “front ofc” |
| Orbitofrontal cortex | Brain science writing | “activity in the OFC” |
| Oxygen-free copper | Audio and speaker cable labels | “OFC speaker wire” |
In a text from a friend, none of these apply. Ofc there is just “of course.” If the rest of the message is full of short forms you do not know, paste the whole line into the Text Slang Translator. It will show the message in plain English.
