Chopped Meaning in Slang: What It Means to Call Someone Chopped

Last updated: October 30, 2026

Chopped is slang for “unattractive” or “uncool.” It is usually an insult about someone’s looks, although people also use it to joke about themselves on a bad hair day. It has nothing to do with cooking, and it is not the same as “cooked,” another slang word it often gets mixed up with.

What does chopped mean in a text?

Dictionary.com defines chopped as slang for “unattractive” or “uncool” and calls it an insult popular with teens, used to put others down for their looks or social status. Merriam-Webster’s slang entry gives a similar meaning: unattractive or undesirable. In messages it shows up in a handful of ways.

How chopped is usedExampleWhat the sender means
Insulting someone’s looks“he’s chopped fr”I find him unattractive
Roasting yourself“I look so chopped in this photo”This is a bad picture of me
After a bad haircut“the barber left me chopped”My haircut did not go well
About something uncool“those shoes are chopped”Those look bad
Chopped and unc“he’s chopped and unc”Unattractive and old

The self-roast is common and mostly harmless. Dictionary.com quotes a TikTok post from January 2026 that reads, “When I realized I’m lowkey even more chopped without my glasses.” Nobody is being attacked there. The poster is laughing at their own selfie.

Where does chopped come from?

According to Dictionary.com, chopped caught on with younger people after a meme known as “Chopped Chin” went viral in late 2024. It grew out of a video of a WNBA player and her teenage son dancing courtside at a game. As views climbed, some commenters said the son’s chin was “chopped,” and the joke spread to TikTok. Dictionary.com notes that because the meme is about a real person, it has been criticized as rude and insensitive.

The word is older than the meme. Dictionary.com says chopped is believed to have started years earlier in African American Vernacular English and to have circulated in Black communities long before it reached social media. Know Your Meme cites an Urban Dictionary definition from December 2014 that already used chopped to mean ugly.

Is chopped rude?

Yes, when it is aimed at someone else. It is a verdict on their looks, and there is no gentle way to call a person chopped. Because the trend began with strangers mocking a real teenager’s face, it carries that edge. Kids may toss it out as a throwaway joke, but the person on the receiving end may not hear it that way.

Using it about yourself is different. “I’m chopped today” after no sleep is a self-deprecating joke, much like saying you look rough. Even so, if a friend says it about themselves a lot, a kind word from you will not hurt.

What do choppelganger and optionally chopped mean?

Dictionary.com lists two spin-offs. A choppelganger, a blend of chopped and doppelganger, is a less attractive lookalike of someone familiar, such as a celebrity. Optionally chopped means looking unattractive by choice. On social media, people post before-and-after videos that start in simple clothes, with no makeup and hair undone, and then switch to a full glow-up.

How is chopped different from cooked, mid and unc?

Chopped sits in a crowd of short slang judgments. They sound alike, but they do different jobs.

TermWhat it meansExample
choppedUnattractive or uncool“that haircut is chopped”
cookedIn trouble, done for“I didn’t study, I’m cooked”
midAverage, nothing special“the movie was mid”
uncOld or out of touch“ok unc”
chopped and uncUnattractive and old“he’s chopped and unc”

People mix up chopped and cooked because both sound like kitchen words. Cooked is about a bad situation, while chopped is about how someone looks. For the age half of “chopped and unc,” see our guide to what unc means.

Should parents worry about chopped?

It is worth knowing, because it is an insult about appearance and can be part of bullying. If your child says classmates are calling them chopped, take it seriously, even if it sounds like silly slang. Young people are often sensitive about their looks, and a word repeated in a group chat can hurt more than it seems.

Watch for the self-roast as well. One “I look chopped” after a bad photo is normal. A steady stream of it, or refusing to be in pictures, can be a sign that a young person is struggling with how they see themselves, and that is worth a gentle conversation.

If your child uses it about others, a calm question can help: “How would it feel if someone said that about you?” That tends to work better than banning the word.

How do you reply if someone calls you chopped?

Your reply depends on whether it was friendly teasing or a real dig. These cover the usual cases.

  • A friend joking: “you look chopped lol” gets “says you”
  • About a photo: “delete that, you look chopped” gets “it’s staying up, I like it”
  • If it hurt: “that’s not funny to me” is a clear, calm reply
  • A friend roasting themselves: “I’m so chopped today” gets “you look fine, you’re just tired”
  • A group chat pile-on: you can skip joining in, or say “ok, that’s enough”

You never owe anyone a comeback. Muting a chat or walking away is a reply too. For other slang in a message, paste the text into our text slang translator and read it in plain English.
