Mid means average, mediocre or disappointing. When someone calls a movie, a meal or a song mid, they mean it was not terrible, just underwhelming. It is usually a put-down, and it is often aimed at something other people rate highly. Most people type it in lowercase.
What does mid mean in a text?
Merriam-Webster’s slang entry defines mid as “of mediocre or disappointing quality.” Dictionary.com describes it as a word for something or someone that is mediocre or low quality, and notes that it is often used as a humorous insult, especially about things others consider excellent. In a text it usually comes at the end of a sentence, as the verdict.
| How mid is used | Example | What the sender means |
|---|---|---|
| Rating a show or game | “season 2 was mid” | It was a letdown |
| Pushing back on hype | “that viral cafe is mid tbh” | It is overrated |
| Judging food | “the fries were mid” | Edible, nothing special |
| About your own work | “my drawing came out mid” | I’m not happy with it |
| About a person | “he’s mid” | Unimpressive. This one can hurt |
Mid is harsher than “average” sounds. Average is neutral. Mid carries a sense of disappointment, as if the thing should have been better. That is why it is so often used about hyped films, viral restaurants and famous albums. Calling something mid is a way of saying “I don’t get the fuss.”
Where does mid come from?
Mid is a shortening of middle, as in middle quality. Merriam-Webster says the slang sense is believed to come from mid-grade. Dictionary.com explains that mid-grade was a label for cannabis of average strength or quality, used in that sense since at least the early 2000s.
From there the word broadened. Dictionary.com says that starting around the early 2010s, mid was used for anything mediocre, though mostly by people who knew the older cannabis slang. It became more popular around 2019, and in the early 2020s it took off on TikTok, where it is often used as an insult.
For parents, the cannabis root does not mean a teen who calls a movie mid is talking about drugs. The word has broadened well beyond that use. In a chat that is clearly about cannabis, though, mid can still mean mid-grade, so the topic of the conversation is the clue.
Is calling something mid rude?
It depends on the target. About a chain restaurant or a blockbuster, mid is just an opinion, and nobody is hurt. About something a friend made and shared with pride, like a song, a drawing or a meal they cooked, it can sting, because it dismisses the effort in one word.
About a person, mid is a real insult. Calling someone’s looks or personality mid says they are forgettable. Online, it is a common way to tear down people others praise, and it can pile up quickly in comments. If you would not say it to the person’s face, it is worth leaving out.
How is mid different from meh, basic and overrated?
Several words describe something that falls short. They overlap, but each one points at a different problem.
| Word | What it says | Example |
|---|---|---|
| mid | Mediocre and disappointing | “the sequel was mid” |
| meh | I don’t care either way | “the party was meh” |
| basic | Unoriginal, follows the crowd | “pumpkin spice is so basic” |
| overrated | Not as good as people say | “that band is overrated” |
| mid-tier | In the middle of a ranking | “a mid-tier phone for the price” |
| decent | Fine, mildly positive | “the food was decent” |
Mid and overrated often go together, since both push back on hype. Meh is softer and shows a lack of interest rather than a verdict. Mid-tier is neutral and common in reviews and rankings, so it does not carry the sting of mid on its own.
People also adjust how strong mid sounds. “Kinda mid” or “a little mid” softens it into a mild letdown. “So mid” makes it firmer, and “mid at best” means barely average. The core idea stays the same: not bad enough to hate, not good enough to love.
Not every mid is slang
Mid is also an ordinary English prefix and word. “Mid-July,” “midterm,” “mid-sentence” and “midway” all simply mean the middle of something. The slang mid stands alone, usually at the end of a sentence, and gives a judgment. If it is attached to a time or a place, it is the everyday word.
| Sentence | Which mid | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| “see you in mid-July” | Everyday word | The middle of July |
| “he stopped mid-sentence” | Everyday word | Partway through |
| “that album is mid” | Slang | Disappointing |
| “a mid-size SUV” | Everyday word | Medium-sized |
How do you reply when someone says mid?
It depends on whether you agree and on what they called mid. Keep it light if it is just an opinion, and be honest if it was something you made.
- When you agree: “that movie was mid” gets “so mid, the trailer was better”
- When you disagree: “that album is mid” gets “no way, track 4 alone is worth it”
- About your own work: “your edit is mid” gets “fair, what would make it better?”
- As a tease between friends: “your cooking is mid” gets “then you’re making dinner tomorrow”
- When it feels personal: “you’re mid” gets “ok, that was harsh”
