Brainrot Meaning: What Brain Rot Means in Slang and Online

Last updated: October 30, 2026

Brainrot means silly, low-effort online content, and the dull, foggy feeling people joke about after watching too much of it. It can describe the videos themselves, the effect they have, or a way of talking packed with meme references. Most people use it with a wink, about their own habits. Oxford University Press named “brain rot” its Word of the Year for 2024.

What does brainrot mean in a text?

Oxford defines brain rot as “the supposed deterioration of a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as the result of overconsumption of material (now particularly online content) considered to be trivial or unchallenging.” In everyday use the word is spelled as one word, two words or with a hyphen, and all three mean the same thing.

How brainrot is usedExampleWhat the sender means
The content itself“my feed is pure brainrot today”Silly, pointless videos
The effect“I have brainrot, I read the same line five times”Too much scrolling has fried my focus
A way of talking“my little brother only speaks in brainrot”He talks in meme phrases and in-jokes
Affection“this is my favorite kind of brainrot”It is dumb and I love it
A warning“put the phone down, brainrot is setting in”Take a break

In most messages, brainrot is self-mockery. People say it about their own habits far more often than they aim it at others.

Where does brain rot come from?

The phrase is much older than TikTok. Oxford found its first recorded use in 1854, in Henry David Thoreau’s “Walden.” He asked: “While England endeavours to cure the potato rot, will not any endeavour to cure the brain-rot – which prevails so much more widely and fatally?” He was criticizing a culture that preferred simple ideas to hard ones.

The modern sense grew on social media, especially among Gen Z and Gen Alpha. Oxford reported that use of the term rose 230% between 2023 and 2024. More than 37,000 people voted in its public Word of the Year poll, and the result was announced on 2 December 2024. Casper Grathwohl, president of Oxford Languages, said the word reflects concern about how people spend their free time.

What counts as brainrot content?

Oxford linked the term to Alexey Gerasimov’s “Skibidi Toilet” video series and to “only in Ohio” memes. It also noted related slang such as “skibidi,” used to mean nonsense, and “Ohio,” used to mean weird or embarrassing.

In 2025 a new wave arrived under the name “Italian brainrot.” Know Your Meme traces it to early January 2025, when a TikTok video of an AI-made shark wearing Nike shoes, called Tralalero Tralala, was posted with an Italian-sounding voiceover. Other characters such as Bombardiro Crocodilo, a crocodile crossed with a bomber plane, followed by March. The videos are deliberately absurd, which is the whole joke.

So brainrot is less a genre than a verdict. If something is loud, repetitive, nonsensical and impossible to stop watching, someone will call it brainrot.

Is brainrot bad for you?

The word itself is a joke, not a diagnosis. Nobody’s brain literally rots from memes. But Oxford noted that the term reflects real concern about the effect of heavy online content on mental health, especially for children and young people. When teens use it about themselves, they are often admitting they spent more time scrolling than they meant to.

That self-awareness is useful. A teen who says “I have brainrot” is halfway to deciding to put the phone down. A lecture tends to shut that down. A question such as “what was so funny?” keeps it open.

How is brainrot different from doomscrolling and cringe?

These words get mixed up, but they describe different things.

TermWhat it meansExample
brainrotSilly content, or the fog after too much of it“that was two hours of brainrot”
doomscrollingScrolling through bad or worrying news“I was doomscrolling until 2 a.m.”
cringeEmbarrassing or awkward“his dance video is so cringe”
chronically onlineSpends so much time online it shows“that take is chronically online”
skibidiNonsense, from the Skibidi Toilet videos“what is this skibidi homework”

Brainrot is the gentlest of these. It is usually fond, even when the speaker is complaining.

Should parents worry about brainrot?

Not about the word. Kids use it to laugh at themselves and at the weird videos they share. It is worth noticing what the word points to, though. If a child keeps saying they have brainrot, they may be telling you they feel scattered or tired from screen time.

A few steps help without turning it into a fight. Watch one of the videos with them and ask what makes it funny. Agree on phone-free times, such as meals or the hour before bed. And treat the slang as a sign of humor, not of damage; most kids who use it are perfectly sharp.

How to reply to brainrot

Match the mood of the message. These cover the cases you will meet most.

  • A shared meme: “this is peak brainrot” gets “why did I laugh at that”
  • A confession: “I have actual brainrot from scrolling” gets “time for a walk?”
  • A friend talking in memes: “skibidi rizz Ohio” gets “please speak English”
  • A complaint about a feed: “my For You page is pure brainrot” gets “same, mine is all shark videos”
  • A parent asking: “is this brainrot?” gets “yes, and it’s the good kind”

Quick example: “sorry I didn’t answer, I was deep in brainrot” means they were lost in their phone. For other terms in a message, paste the text into our text slang translator, or look up words like skibidi in the Gen Z slang list.
