SlangSense explains slang so that anyone can understand a message, a caption or a comment. This page explains how meanings are researched, written, checked and corrected.
Who writes SlangSense
Meanings are researched and written by Saria, the site’s editor. Every page shows when it was last updated.
How a meaning is researched
- Real usage first. A word gets a page only after it has been seen in real use: posts, comments, messages, videos or song lyrics.
- Cross-checked. Meanings are compared with established references such as Merriam-Webster, Wiktionary and Urban Dictionary, and with how different communities actually use the word.
- Answer first. The first sentence of each page says what the word means. Examples, origin, regional or community differences and how to reply follow.
- Several meanings, clearly separated. When a word means different things in different places (for example in gaming, in Spanish, or on TikTok), each meaning is explained separately.
Offensive, explicit and drug-related slang
Some slang is rude, sexual or connected with drugs or violence. These words are explained factually so parents, teachers and readers can understand what they see, without promoting the behaviour behind them.
AI tools on SlangSense
The slang translators use an AI model to rewrite slang in plain English. They are fast and usually accurate, but they can miss very new or very local slang. The written meaning pages are checked by a person and are the reference to rely on.
Updates and corrections
Slang changes quickly. Pages are reviewed and updated when a meaning shifts or a new use appears. If you think a meaning is wrong, missing or outdated, email [email protected] with the word and where you saw it. Corrections are reviewed and the page is updated.
Independence
SlangSense is free to use and supported by advertising. Advertisers have no influence on which words are covered or how they are explained.
