WTW means “what’s the word?” It is a casual way to ask what is going on or what the plan is. A friend who texts “wtw tonight” wants to know if anything is happening. It works as a hello and as an invite at the same time.
What does wtw mean in a text?
It can be a greeting or a question about plans, and the words next to it tell you which. On its own, “wtw” is close to “what’s up.” With a time or a place added, it turns into “what are we doing?” Cyber Definitions describes it as a conversation starter, in the same family as WSP.
| Text you get | What they are asking |
|---|---|
| “wtw” | What’s up? How are you? |
| “wtw tonight?” | Is there a plan for tonight? |
| “wtw with you and Sam?” | What is the news there? |
| “wtw after the game” | Where is everyone going? |

Notice that none of these need a long answer. The sender is opening a door, not asking for a report. Cyber Definitions lists both adults and teenagers as typical users, so it is not just a teen thing. So what do you say back?
How do you reply to wtw?
Answer the question they are really asking. If it is a hello, say what you are up to. If it is about plans, give a plan or ask for one. Tap the case that fits you.
You are free and want to hang out
Give a clear idea so the chat moves. Try “nothing yet, wanna get food?” A time and a place make it easy to say yes.
You are busy
Say so and offer another time. Try “working till 9, wtw tomorrow?” That keeps the door open without a long excuse.
You do not know the sender well
Keep it short and friendly. “Not much, you?” is enough. You can decide later if you want to make plans.
Whatever you pick, answer the same day. A wtw text is about right now, and a reply the next morning misses the point. If you cannot make it, say when you can. That keeps the invite alive for next time.
Sometimes the reply you get back is full of short forms you do not know. Paste the whole line into the Text Slang Translator to see it in plain English. It reads the full message, so the meaning fits the context.
Does wtw mean the same thing on Snapchat, Instagram and TikTok?
Yes, the meaning does not change from app to app. What changes is who sees it. In a direct message it is aimed at you, so it needs a reply. On a public story or caption it is aimed at everyone, and it is fine to scroll past.
| Where you see it | Who it is for | Do you need to answer? |
|---|---|---|
| A text or DM | You | Yes |
| A group chat | Whoever is free | Only if you want in |
| A story or caption | Everyone who views it | No |
Does wtw mean someone likes you?
Not by itself. It is the same message a person sends to a friend, a cousin or a teammate. What matters is the pattern, such as how often they text and what they suggest next. One wtw text is an invite to talk, and nothing more should be read into it.
Where does wtw come from?
The letters stand for a phrase people already said out loud. Urban Dictionary has several entries for “what’s the word” from 2016, and the earliest one we saw is dated June 30, 2016. NoSlang lists the same meaning. We could not find a dated first use, so we will not name a creator or a song.
One entry from June 2017 reads the letters as “what’s the wave.” It asks the same thing, which is what the plan is. You may see both, and you can answer them the same way. The first reading is far more common in the references we checked.
How is wtw different from wyd, wsg and wtm?
These four get mixed up because they all open a chat. The difference is what each one asks for. Some want news, some want a plan, and some are only a hello. This table lines them up.
| Short form | Stands for | What it asks |
|---|---|---|
| wtw | what’s the word | News or plans |
| wtm | what’s the move | A plan, right now |
| wyd | what you doing | What you are busy with |
| wsg | what’s good | Just a hello |
If plans are what you want, WTM is the clearer choice. It skips the small talk and asks for a decision. Wtw is softer, because it leaves room for “nothing, just saying hi.” Pick the one that matches how direct you want to be.
What does WTW mean outside of texting?
In capital letters, WTW is often a name. Wikipedia lists the insurance firm Willis Towers Watson, the phrase water treatment works and the location system What3words. A work email or a news story that says WTW is almost never asking about your night. Lowercase letters in a chat are the slang.
When should you not use wtw?
Skip it with anyone you would not call by a nickname. Teachers, managers and customers may not know it, and the lowercase letters can look careless. It also falls flat in serious moments, because it sounds like a party invite. In those cases, write the full question.
Slang like this moves fast, and new openers show up every year. Our list of 300+ Gen Z slang words tracks the ones in use now. It is a quick way to check a word before you send it.
